Alloy family selection against inrush current and arcing

No alloy family is defined with a constant flow ceiling for all applications. Load type, arc energy, contact force, heat path and environment will change the result.

Rated load is not the same as the connection moment

The motor, transformer, lamp and capacitor can draw many times the steady state current at the moment of connection. The waveform and duration of the inrush current are required for the initial screening of the alloy.

Compare alloys based on application priority

AgNi is usually evaluated for the balance of conductivity, wear, and machinability. AgSnO₂ is one of the options to consider in applications where arcing and welding behavior are more important. AgCu and Ag require control of surface film, hardness and DC conditions for different tasks.

AgCdO can only be investigated in valid designs and according to technical and regulatory limitations.

The final exam has no alternative

The initial selection should be confirmed with the sample, actual carrier, contact force and representative duty cycle. Contact resistance, temperature rise, metal transfer, welding and erosion must meet predefined criteria.

The next step

To convert these principles into orderable specifications, provide part drawing, switching conditions, assembly method and production quantity together.
